The other day I was on Clement Street getting lunch at Hard Knox. As I was locking up my bike an older white man was standing right beside me looking at my bike and made a comment about the internal hub gears on my bike. He knew all about the history of the internal hub and told me all about it. I listened politely. "Where'd you get that bike?" It has a bunch of pseudo Italian sounding stickers on it.
"Scattante" is on big letters on the frame. I told him I got it at a bike shop near the Flower Market in SF. "It was pretty cheap" I told him.
"Chinese always know where to get things the cheapest" he said.
"That's racist! I'm just a smart shopper and I'm actually Japanese."
"Where were you born?" he asked.
"Gilroy"
"Where was your father born?"
"Gilroy"
"How about your grandfather?"
"Gilroy"
I shut that motherfucker down!
